Shift The Power to the People PSA #2

Julia Jones, Chaske Spencer, Justin Chon, Gil Birmingham, Alex Meraz, Boo Boo Stewart and others are again trying to bring attention to the plight of the Sioux Nation.

Chaske Spencer in an interview with Indian Country Today explains that the problem comes down to a basic need of water.

“The current water system is outdated and operating at capacity, leaving the tribe no room for economic expansion and preventing its housing authority from building new homes. To build a new water infrastructure is estimated to cost over $500 million dollars. This was promised to the Sioux people over 50 years ago and this allocation would put a long-term solution in place and give the Lakota Sioux people an opportunity to prosper. Without water, the most basicbuilding block of life and society, the people of the Lakota Sioux Reservation have little hope of impacting their situation in a way where they may prosper and thrive.

Since the late 1950’s the tribe has been forced to move from their original Tribal Head Quarters, known as the Old Agency on Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, which was located on the river bottom. The Tribal leaders during this time, built schools, hospitals and their own police department with tribal dollars. All is under water now. The book “Dammed Indians” shows how the Pick-Sloan Act forced tribal people up and down the Missouri River. This was done to make way for the Dam to make Hydro Power for the government. The precious resource of water is utilized to generate billions of dollars worth of electricity yearly, for the United States Government.

Currently, without a water infrastructure, they cannot build new homes and cannot build on any new development. The system is keeping an impoverished nation, impoverished.”

Justin Chon in Korea Times

Justin Chon talked to Korea Times about his clothing store and The Twilight Saga.

The 28-year-old has become a familiar face as a member of the quartet of classmates that gets to hang out with Bella and Edward, the mortal-vampire power couple of the multimillion-dollar franchise.

“It turned out to be a crazy ride,” he said.

Chon was just as animated in person as he is onscreen, though he sported a shorter haircut and edgier street wear, all from his own clothing shop. Dressing for success doth right ? Catherine Hardwicke, the director of the first installment of the movie series, apparently fancied his attire at the audition and requested that he wear the metrosexual tie-and-shirt ensemble in the film.

He was one of the few Asians vying for the role, which was originally written for a Caucasian. But no one expected “Twilight,” a small cult movie, to turn into an international sensation, either.

Justin Chon Interview With TwilightActors.com

In this new interview, Justin Chon talks about getting the role of Eric, his friends on and off set, and the Twilight filming experience.

TA: What was your experience like with Twilight, filming the movie and everything surrounding it?

Justin: Just in it for the ride? I don’t know’I don’t even really feel like I understand, being on the inside of it, understanding how big it is yet. I mean, it’s my job and that part’s really cool’that I’m in the movie, and I’m in A movie. But, it’s just, as an actor, you just do what you do, but I don’t know if I fully’I think, maybe 10 years after it’s done, I’ll look back and go ‘whoa, that was something’wow, yea.’

TA: Are you really close with any cast members?

Justin: Yea, I’m really close with Mike. Michael Welch’who plays Mike Newton in the movie. I’m close to all my co-stars. But, certain people you spend a lot more time with, and in my case, it’s the other students in the school, like all the other human beings. Obviously we shoot together all the time and our schedules are the same.

TA: Do you all hang out together outside of filming?

Justin: Yes.

Justin Chon One Of the Top 10 Most Influential Korean-Americans

Justin Chon (aka Eric Yorkie), has been placed on the top ten most influential Korean-Americans list by the Korean Beacon.

According to KB, “Justin Chon was one of the most searched people on our website and the two interviews we conducted with him had some of the highest traffic this past year.”

Chon, who portrays “Eric Yorkie” in the Twilight series, has had a fun career to watch unfold over the past few years. He’s taken on really serious films like Crossing Over, but he’s also had some fun with acting with films like Hack! Additionally, he went viral with a short (but very, very well done) film entitled Turbo recently.

KB notes quite accurately that Chon is “very appreciative of the Twilight fame but his ambition is to work harder and to challenge himself with bigger roles.  Justin had a great year in 2009 and we know you’ll see more of him in 2010 and beyond.”

Justin Chon of Twilight New Moon will star in a live webcast session on CNNGo hosted by iamKoreAm.com. The live webcast will take place on November 18 beginning at 11am HKT (12pm in South Korea, and November 17 at 10pm EST in the United States).

Blood? That’s for suckers. Justin will talk about what it’s like to be a mere human in a movie franchise all about vampires and werewolves.

The 28-year-old Justin Chon returns to his role as Eric Yorkie, classmate of lead character, Bella Swan. Chon is gearing up for the premiere of “New Moon,” the second film adapted from Stephenie Meyer’s novels, which hits theaters in North America on November 20. Along with plenty of vampire love and heartache, Twilighters can look forward to seeing Eric and Angela’s awkward romance blossom.

Chon will talk about “New Moon,” the next Twilight installment “Eclipse” and discuss projects he’s currently working on. He’ll even sing a couple songs.

New Interview With Twilight Humans

The Calgary Herald has an interview with the humans from the Twilight Saga franchise:

Sure, New Moon’s vampires and werewolves may get all the attention, but it’s Bella’s gang of high school friends who keep the movie centered in reality. Anna Kendrick, Michael Welch, Justin Chon and Christian Serratos (who play Jessica, Mike, Eric and Angela, respectively) talk about providing the franchise’s comic relief and keeping it real as mortals amongst all the supernatural shenanigans.

Unlike Twilight, which was shot in Portland, you shot New Moon in Vancouver. What was that like?

Justin: The weather’s actually been better here. Portland was very, very, very cold and rainy. It’s a little bit nicer here.

Anna: One of the freaky things about shooting New Moon in a different location than Portland was the re-creation of things, like the high school parking lot. It was like déjà vu because we were in a different country but they completely recreated the parking lot from the school we shot at before.

You also got a new director. What was it like working with Chris Weisz?

Michael: Chris was really great. Catherine [Hardwicke] was wonderful too, but they’re just totally different in terms of their style and their process. And I think that as a result, you’re going to end up with a film that just feels very different. I think that Chris made more of a conscious effort to have a visual cohesiveness in terms of how the film is going to look and feel with the vampires, the werewolves and the humans. Visually, it’s more stylistic. And as far as the way he likes to work on set, he’s just very calm and very clear-headed and intelligent. He knows what he wants and puts a lot into the preparation so by the time we get to the set it’s all sort of mapped out for us.

Christian: He’s really awesome. He’s very well-organized, well-spoken, fun and carefree – simultaneously. It’s incredible.

Justin Chon Talks With Hollywood Crush About Writing a Screenplay

Justin Chon talked with Hollywood Crush about looking for a really good role to play and he decided to write it himself. Check it out -

“It’s up to us to make something; we’ve decided that we want a movie that doesn’t [focus on our race]…that being Asian-American is just circumstantial and it doesn’t have to be the main focus point of the movie,” explained Justin, who along with another Asian-American actor is currently writing a script that they hope will explode in a similar fashion. “[Things we get offered] are like, ‘Oh, I’m Asian, how do I deal with that?’ Like “My mother, she’s like a nagging Chinese woman!’ That’s not interesting anymore, you know?”

Instead, Justin and “Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants” actor Leonardo Nam are hard at work on a film that won’t go down those same tired paths. “I’m actually writing something with my friend, Leo Nam…he was in the third ‘Fast and Furious,’” Justin revealed. “He’s a great actor; we’re writing a script right now.”

“What we’re writing is about a road trip down to Argentina, with three kids that grew up in Huntington; it’s a really cool story,” he explained, saying it’s part comedy, part drama. “There’s a little bit of everything. It’s like ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’ meets ‘Lords of Dogtown.’”

“It’s a working title, but I think it’s called ‘The Glass-Off Memoirs’,” revealed the actor, whose short-film “Turbo” hit the web recently, and will return in both “Twilight” sequels as fan fave Eric Yorkie. “It’s called a ‘Glass-Off’ when you surf, towards the end [of the day], when the wind dies down and the sun goes down, and everything starts to calm down and the water becomes real glassy. That’s what you call a ‘Glass-Off.’ And then, this is kind of like a memoir.”

Justin Chon in Ningin Magazine

justinchon1

Justin Chon chatted with Ningin Magazine in this two-part interview. Here are some snippets from his interview!

JI: With the success of Twilight going from being an indie film to a massive franchise, how has this affected your experience of filming New Moon?

JC: Not much at all. A movie set is a movie set, the only thing that’s different is they’re just a lot more protective with the people and they have umbrellas so photographers can’t take pictures. You know, the only thing that’s affected is personal freedom. You can’t just walk off the set and smoke a cigarette anymore and they have to know where you are at all times. They set up these black walls everywhere so you can’t escape the set. But other than that, filming-wise, filming is the same. Just a different director. There’s differences in those terms but with that, in terms of the work, it’s the same.

JI: Have you read the entire Twilight series?

JC: Yeah, it’s part of the job. But umm, I’ve heard some crazy things about what’s planned for the series. I’m not allowed to say what exactly, but they’re trying to do other stuff. But yeah, I think I’m ready to — My dream right now is…I’ve done like the films… okay I guess I should say I’ve done a franchise but now one of my dreams is to do a TV show.

JI: What’s one thing about you that you’d like people to know?

JC: I’m actually very shy.

JI: You, shy? I find that hard to believe.

JC: See that’s why you don’t know that one.

JI: Why do you think you’re very shy?

JC: Um why? I don’t know, I get really self-concious, I guess. I uh, lemme see how do I explain this…When I get in groups of big people I don’t know, like big groups, I tend to shut down. It seems like I’m out there or whatever, but that’s not an actor because I’m allowed to. So when the cameras turn on, I’m allowed to be out there. But if you ever see me at a party or whatever, I just can’t do it. You can ask [my publicist]Anthony and Anthony freakin’ hates it. We’ll go to a social mixer or somewhere you’re supposed to network…I can’t do that stuff. See that’s the thing, what you see on the movies or TV, you would think, “Oh my god, he seems like so much fun to hang out with!” Well yeah, if you’re a good friend of mine, hell yeah we would have a ton of fun. I’d be really free and speak my mind, but if it’s like a bunch of people I don’t know I get self-concious because I think about what are these people going to think about me? Am I going to say the wrong thing? I just start thinking things and it just pollutes the mind. That’s the big thing that people don’t know about me.

New Interview With Edi, Gil, and Justin from the Twilight Examiner

September 29, 2009 by Sara

EdiGil-300x234

The Twilight Examiner brings us an exclusive interview from the Fantasy TwiLife event in Orlando this last weekend with Edi Gathegi (Laurent), Gil Birmingham (Billy Black) and Justin Chon (Eric Yorkie).

Q: With New Moon, you guys are doing promotionals that seem to be ten times more than with Twilight .. So how does it feel that this time around you guys as individuals are so much more important with the fans for the promotional aspects. So, how is that for you? Is it exciting, is it trying, or is it a part of you at this point …
Edi: I’d say it’s become a part of the job description now.
Justin: Yeah … but you know, you don’t really think about it too much. You just do it kind of … They ask you do to something and you just do it… It’s not that big of a deal.
Edi: Our whole lives are like you have an appointment on Thursday at two o’clock, you have an audition at x time, and you have press on this day …
Justin: Yeah …
Edi: And I think you just build it into the schedule of what you do.
Justin: Yeah, you don’t think about it.
Edi: But I don’t really feel like I’m doing more than with Twilight, I feel like I was really busy for Twilight.
Q: Really?
Edi: Yeah, and I think it’s because it just hasn’t started up yet, but from now on, we’re going to have a lot of press I think…
Q: And what kind of motivates you guys to do the conventions as opposed to some of your other colleagues who don’t choose to?
Justin: Um, I think it’s fun, and you get to go somewhere that maybe you haven’t been before. I mean, I haven’t been to Orlando in so long, and I’ve gotten to go to Europe twice. That’s pretty awesome … and meet people who actually want to talk to you.
Edi: You’re like loved as soon as you walk in the door.
Justin: That’s a good feeling.
Gil: Oh, I just love the fans. The fans are the best part of it. Just to have interaction and hear their stories and how involved they are with the series. There’s some fabulous stories I’ve heard and I’m completely touched by it. And from that way, it makes things all really worthwhile.
Q: In the books, some of the character ethnicity was a little bit undefined, so how has it been to approach portraying these characters with a diverse cast?
Justin: … the obvious one is ‘I didn’t know Eric was Asian.’
Edi: Do they say ‘I didn’t know he was Asian’ or do they say ‘he’s not Asian?’
Justin: ‘I didn’t know he was Asian’ or ‘When did Yorkie become an Asian last name?’ But I think those both are good things to worry about. You know? … being Asian, that’s cool too because it brings awareness that we need a cast that’s more diverse. And so I think it’s a good thing that people are talking about it.
Q: With the new cast, who’s obviously not here, how has it been to help them immerse themselves into this world you’ve been a part of since the beginning?
Justin: They’re doing fine.
Q: [To Gil] How’s it been for you, though, introducing them? Has anyone been like ‘you’re the Godfather’?
Edi: Yeah [Laughs]!
Gil: [In an ominous voice] Yeah, I’m the Godfather. [Laughs] I love it, though, because it’s like my whole family just got expanded, and in this particular place they’re just a bunch of puppy dogs anyways. You know, fighting, chomping at the bit, and they had a lot of personality and part of a perspective of the Native traditional roots that brought that whole legend to it.
Q: And now you have Boo Boo and Julia … I understand you’ve already worked with them?
Gil: Yeah. We’ve got Leah and Alex Rice, yeah, I’ve known most of them for years, and every time they cast somebody it’s just, it’s perfect. Their personalities are perfect for the characters. It’s great.
Q: [To Justin] And Anna [Kendrick] had an interview recently where she said that the humans were kind of expanded in New Moon and beyond. Can you give an example of that by chance?
Justin: I’m just grateful that they’ve included us at all because at the end of the day, it’s a movie about a love story and werewolves and vampires, but yeah it’s cool to see that they want to have more of a dynamic. It can’t be too moody the whole time, so we’re there to kind of bring levity to the whole thing …
Edi: This guy’s got such a brilliant moment in the movie that I won’t give away …
Justin: [laughs]
Edi: … but it’s like one of my favorite parts of the whole movie though.
Q: So, the comic relief?
Edi: It’s so good though … No such thing as small roles, only small people.
Q: Okay, so favorite scene in New Moon?
Edi: The meadow scene …
Justin: The meadow scene … [laughs]
Gil: The meadow scene …
Edi: Yeah! Bring Laurent back!
[All laugh]
