Summit Sued By New Moon Script Finder

February 23, 2010 by Sara

The folks over at Twilight Lexicon have a very interesting post about Casey Ray, the woman who found both a New Moon script and a Remember Me script in the dumpster in St. Louis.

Roughly a year ago Casey Ray, a St. Louis area hairdresser, found Anna Kendrick’s watermarked New Moon script in a dumpster outside a hotel where Anna had been staying while she shot Up in the Air With George Clooney and crew.  Additionally she found another unwatermarked script entitled “Memoirs” at the same location. Memoirs was the original title for Remember Me.

When Ray found the scripts, she considered leaking them to a national tabloid but decided against it, said her lawyer, Al Watkins.

“My client didn’t really want to get paid,” he said, but she was interested in hanging onto the scripts as collector’s items.

Watkins helped her return them to Los Angeles-based Summit Entertainment LLC, the studio making the movies. He said the studio invited Ray to premieres for the two films, and will certify the scripts as authentic after the movies are released.

“Summit doesn’t comment on any of the deals it does,” Summit spokesman Paul Pflug said. But he added, “We thank Ms. Ray for doing the right thing.”

MSNBC has a good outline of what happened here.

Then several months later, Casey Ray complained to TMZ that it was going to cost her over $1,200 in travel expenses to attend the New Moon premiere and after party. As part of her deal she was able to attend both events, walk down the read carpet, and get a script signed by the entire cast, but travel expenses were never included.

“Casey Ray tells TMZ she’s grateful Summit Entertainment coughed up two tickets to the film’s L.A. premiere and after party on November 16 — but the cost of traveling expenses is biting her in the behind.

Ray says the round-trip tickets for her and her niece cost $1,200 — plus another bundle to pay for a hotel and whatever other expenses the duo happens to rack up.

We spoke to a rep for Summit who says Ray’s complaint comes as a complete surprise. The rep said Ray had no problems with the reward package — which also includes a walk down the red carpet and a signed copy of the script by the movie’s lead actors — when she agreed on it back in May … and Summit hasn’t heard a peep from Ray since.”

Read the rest on TMZ

EDITED:(Just found more to the story, read below) Al Watkins, Casey Ray’s attorney, denies the TMZ story and sheds more light on his client’s frame of mind:

“”Casey and I told them that we would have loved it if Summit had paid for her flight and hotel, but that was never part of the deal,” Watkins tells Daily RFT. “They just took that one part of our conversation and ran with it.”

Watkins adds that part of the deal with Summit has Ray receiving a copy of the script signed by the actors in the film, which could net thousands of dollars at auction.

“It was a very fair deal,” he says.

But what was Ray — a hairdresser with Salon K in the Delmar Loop — doing in the hotel’s garbage to begin with?

“She was waiting for her boyfriend and just killing time,” explains Watkins. “She’s a Dumpster diver. Look, I’m not going to judge her hobby. She opened the bin and the script was lying there right on top. It’s not like she was inside the Dumpster rummaging through the garbage — though I’m not saying she wouldn’t do such a thing.”

Read the rest on the Riverfront Times. There is also a photogallery of Casey Ray having her photo taken with Melissa Rosenberg, Alex Meraz, and Charlie Bewley at what appears to be the red carpet and the after party.

Now apparently instead of attending the Remember Me premiere personally, Casey Ray tried to auction off her premiere tickets and after party attendance on EBAY.  According to correspondence made public via court papers Summit discovered the auction and advised Casey Ray that the items as per their agreement were non-transferable, however Ray’s attorney thinks they are. It then looked like they tried to reach a compromise settlement, which evidently failed, and now there’s a lawsuit.

St. Louis Today has the details. as does the St. Louis Business Journal.

Unless they settle this out of court it’s unlikely that this will be resolved before the Remember Me Premiere which takes place this Monday in New York.  It’s all going to come down to contract law and the written agreements. What do you think about the only certain thing here which is, in our opinion, what a mess!

Dakota Fanning recently spoke with Extra about playing Volturi member Jane in New Moon. Check it out!

From child star to vicious bloodsucker – Dakota Fanning has transformed into the baddest newbie in “New Moon” and she loved every second of it.

“I think it’s more fun to play a bad person than a good person,” Dakota admits of her character Jane, a member of the evil Volturi vampire clan. “She almost blows your mind how evil she is.”

Fanning, 15, wore red contacts and white powder in the film. “I thought I was pale before I did the movie, but I realized that I’m not!” Dakota jokes.

MTV Interview With Ashley Greene

MTV has a cute new interview with Ashley Greene (Alice Cullen) – check it out!

The tabloid covers may be dominated by Rob and Kristen, but in the hearts and minds of “Twilight” fans, there is no cover girl as dazzling as so-sweet-she’ll-give-you-a-cavity series star Ashley Greene. With “New Moon” less than a month away (hooray!), and Alice Cullen’s screen time substantially increased, we caught up with the actress and occasional MTV News correspondent to get her latest thoughts on stealing expensive cars, playing board games with Kellan Lutz, and the “New Moon” cast’s shared love of … kittens?

Movie TrailersMovies Blog

MTV: What was your favorite “New Moon” scene to shoot?

Ashley Greene: Of course, the Porsche was incredible, the whole experience of filming [that scene]. Working with Michael Sheen, it was just really funny how he created this whole atmosphere out of the scene and could switch it up. Everything that he did was a little bit inspired, and so the whole Volturi scene with him was really fun to do. [I also love] the whole Cullen scene, when Bella gets a paper cut and Jasper goes crazy — you haven’t seen that side of him yet. The performances are great, and the whole dynamic is really great. That was one of my favorite scenes to watch.

MTV: You guys have become such good friends and have so much downtime between takes. What sort of things do you talk about when the cameras aren’t rolling?

Greene: Between takes? Gosh, everything. YouTube was a big topic of conversation; we were sharing YouTube videos. Which was kinda funny, because [we'd be filming a] really intense situation, and then they would yell, “Cut!” and we would have 20 minutes and we’d break out “Kittens Inspired by Kittens.” It’s this little girl reading a kittens book. [Laughs.]

MTV: So Alice and Bella would be giggling between all that drama?

Greene: Yeah, there was a lot of that, just a lot of giggling and laughing. During “New Moon,” especially in Italy, me and Kristen were, like, the only girls. So there was a lot of girly giggling going on.

Alex Meraz and Kiowa Gordon in Vanity Fair

In Vanity Fair, Alex Meraz (Paul) and Kiowa Gordon (Embry) chat about New Moon and Eclipse!

AlexMeraz1-200x300

Highlights from Alex Meraz.

Did you receive any guidance from any of the other actors on set?

At that point, you’ve got yourself a job. There’s nothing that anyone else is really going to teach you. I didn’t have anyone holding my hand when I did the audition. What I did to get the job is what I had to do on film. In terms of everything else that was coming with that, with the fame and all of that stuff, [director] Chris Weitz and Kristen [Stewart] had the best advice to give me.

What was it like filming the third installment, Eclipse?

It was no pressure. The pressure was doing the job on the first one, trying to understand the character. On this one, I felt a little bit more comfortable with what I was doing. I already knew the cast, so it was a lot easier.

Has much changed since you’ve started filming the Twilight movies?

Well, I’ve got a lot more family members now! [Laughs] I don’t know, people say after the movie opens things are really going to change. I’m getting a lot of meetings with really great directors and producers—people I really admire. It’s a really good gig to have. The fans are amazing. They’re really the ones that are changing everything for each actor.

KiowaGordon-200x300

Highlights from Kiowa Gordon.

Did anyone on set take you under their wing or give you any good advice?

Just the Wolf Pack. We all helped each other along and gave each other advice.

Has anyone tried to prepare for what’s coming once the film is out?

They’re trying! They keep telling me that it’s going to be a lot crazier than what I’ve seen. They keep telling me that I can’t go outside of my house. I just think it’s nonsense.

Are people recognizing you already in Arizona?

Sometimes, yeah. They just look away and start laughing and whispering to their friends, but I know what they talk about because I can overhear.

Have you seen the finished film yet?

No. I saw the rough cut with Stephenie a couple of months ago. It was really good. I’m sure it’ll be 100 times better when it comes out.

THR: Interview With Chris Weitz

ChrisWeitzTHR

Here is a new interview from The Hollywood Reporter with New Moon’s director Chris Weitz.

THR: How much do you interact with the Twi-hards?

Weitz: Quite a bit. I don’t have an online, direct relation with the fans; I was too busy making the movie. But I sort of feel as though every bit of footage I get out is speaking to the fans in a way. I’ve only addressed the fans directly twice: At the very beginning, when I said, “Don’t worry, I’m going to take care of this book,” and then to address an insane rumor that all the Volturi were naked in their introductory scene. But I listened to what they have to say by checking in on the Internet. I didn’t do it that much while we were shooting because I didn’t want to get swayed one way or another; it would be like a politician just going by the polls. But now that the footage is complete, I kind of enjoy just checking in various sites and seeing what they like.
THR: What is your favorite “Twilight” blog?

Weitz: I don’t really have a favorite. All the blogs are, in a really delightful and noncompetitive way, poaching and linking to one another’s material. So if something is on one blog, it’s very likely to be another blog as well. I think it’s great that there are fan sites that are not there to make money but to express enthusiasm for these books and the movie and they are happy to share information with one another.

THR: Based on the success of the first film, people are expecting a big movie. How do you create a tentpole feel when there isn’t a tentpole budget?

Weitz: The budget isn’t a huge budget; it doesn’t have to be. It comes down to being very efficient with special effects. Also key was the construction budget and the scheduling of the Italian shoot. We squeezed everything we can out of that.

BoxOffice Interview With Taylor Lautner

September 24, 2009 by Sara

Jacob1

In this new interview with Box Office, Taylor Lautner discusses Team Jacob and all the action in New Moon!

Seventeen-year-old Taylor Lautner is the youngest star in Twilight’s fantastical love triangle, but he’s an old pro at discipline. At 11, he was the top ranked global champion in four styles of karate; at 12, he won the Junior World Championship. The next year, Robert Rodriguez [Spy Kids, Sin City] cast him as the kiddie action hero in The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3D, followed up right after with playing one of the brood in Steve Martin’s Cheaper by the Dozen 2. As Twilight’s Jacob—the Quileute Indian high-schooler who learns how to transform into a werewolf just as his classmates learn to shave—Lautner was launched into international stardom, and the most surprising thing about it is the young athlete was first considered too scrawny to make the transition to the brawnier, more action-packed sequel, New Moon. One year and thirty pounds of muscle later (every ounce of which was breathlessly detailed on fansites), Lautner’s on the cover of magazines, he’s featured prominently on New Moon’s poster and, true to form, the young actor is already hard at work on the third installment in the series, 2010’s Eclipse. Though he’s hardly had a break since he first entered the dojo as a first-grader, Lautner’s in high spirits, laughing his way through an interview where he tells BOXOFFICE about his secret love for romantic comedies and whether he’d ever date a fan.
If the last two books in the series hadn’t already been written, what do you think Jacob should do to win over Bella?

I don’t think he would have changed anything, and I don’t think he should change anything. Jacob and Edward are extremely different guys and it’s just whether you want one guy or another. Jacob is himself, and he has a relationship with Bella that Edward doesn’t. And Edward has a relationship with Bella that Jacob doesn’t. So I wouldn’t change a thing.

As an actor, how do you make the audience root for Jacob and get invested in his feelings when the outcome of the love triangle is already known?

Well, you try and take things one step at a time. When I’m filming New Moon, I’m not thinking about Eclipse. When I’m filming Eclipse, I’m not thinking about Breaking Dawn. We just have to focus on the movie that we’re doing.

What is it like for your family and friends to see people scream at pictures of you topless?

[Laughs] It’s weird. It’s embarrassing for me, and I’m sure it’s awkward for all of them.

Have you gotten teased about it at family dinners?

Not yet, and I’m hoping that doesn’t happen because I’ll start blushing.

You came into acting from karate. Do they overlap—they seem to share the need for focus and concentration.

It’s a lot of hard work. That’s probably the most I got out of karate: it was a lot of work. A lot of training. And you need that for everything in life.

EW Interview With Kristen Stewart

The Entertainment Weekly magazine out in stores today includes a new interview with New Moon star Kristen Stewart. Check some of it out -

Stewart also opens up a little on her other roles, talking specifically here about Adventureland. But for those of you not paying attention, Stewart just wrapped work on The Runaways, where she chopped her hair and dyed it black to play iconic ’80s rocker Joan Jett.

I asked Stewart recently about what seems to be a need to take on other film roles during the scant down time she gets between shooting the Twilight movies. “It would’ve been smart to take some time off too, but I’m really glad I did Runaways,” she said. “If it was Twilight all the time, I would go mad. To just play one character for four years, it’s not what I do. I like to have variation. I like to change it up. To live one experience, it would be like I have this weird alter-ego, alternate life, instead of slipping into a character for 6 weeks, sucking it dry, and leaving. It would be like 4 years of living like a f***ng psycho person, thinking that I’m like Bella. You know what I mean? It would just be impossible for me. The tabloids would have a lot of crazy s— to say about me in that case.”

Say what you will about Twilight, but you’ve got to give it to Stewart. It would be easy to sit around and ride the Twilight train all the way to the bank. This is one actress willing to mix it up while the gettin’ is good. Check out the video chat below, and after the jump, a clip of Stewart and Lautner wrestling during their EW cover shoot.

Muse to Perform at VMA’s

July 16, 2009 by Sara

Stephenie Meyer’s favorite band, Muse, will be performing at the VMAs on September 13 at 9 P.M. E.T.

Muse is Stephenie Meyer’s favorite band — she thanked them for their inspiration and called them “rock gods” in “New Moon” and “Eclipse,” and then decided to dedicate “Eclipse” to the band for providing “a saga’s worth of inspiration.” Their “Supermassive Black Hole” also appeared on the soundtrack for the “Twilight” film.

But, perhaps not everyone who’s read the books is aware of the full impact the band had on Meyer … their music even influenced key scenes in the series, as she told MTV News last year.

“I was in Forks [Washington, the city where 'Twilight' is based] with my sister — before any of the books had come out, just sort of scoping it out,” Meyer said. “I was working on ‘Eclipse’ at the time, and I had [Muse's album] Absolution in, and ‘Hysteria’ came on and, in my mind, the kiss scene between [Bella] and Jacob just choreographed itself, down to how many steps he took toward her. So whenever I read that now, I always hear the song in my mind.”
