Taylor Lautner Drops Out of ‘Max Steele’

So it seems that Taylor Lautner  has backed out of playing Max Steel now that he has taken the role of Stretch Armstrong.  Here is what MTV has to say:

After dropping out of “Northern Lights” earlier this week, the 18-year-old has parted ways with another project, “Max Steel,” based on the Mattel toy, reports New York magazine’s Vulture blog.Sources say it was his “Stretch Armstrong” collaboration with rival toy company Hasbro that was the impetus for Taylor’s departure. According to Vulture, Taylor realized Hasbro was doing a better job with its movie properties than Mattel. To wit, the toy company has leveraged board games Candy Land, Battleship and Risk into high-profile projects and had earlier success with a couple small flicks called “G.I. Joe” and “Transformers.” Added one source, “When you sign up to make a movie with Hasbro, you know it will be in theaters a year later.”

Less of Taylor Lautner is never a good thing, but we can’t say we’re too sad to see “Max Steel” go. While the toy is wildly popular internationally, it doesn’t seem to have much name recognition here in the U.S. Though we will mourn those could-have-been shirtless scenes. Sigh.

So to recap, Taylor’s current project list is comprised of “Cancun,” “Abduction” and “Stretch Armstrong.” And “Breaking Dawn” if Summit ever gets around to it. Still a lot for the rising actor, but a more manageable list, for sure.

The Different Career Paths of Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner

February 23, 2010 by Sara

iVillage has a new article on the two different directions that each of the Twilight leading men are headed in.  Taylor Lautner has lined up all sorts of action, films while Robert Pattinson’s films are more dramatic.

No one in Hollywood is hotter right now than Twilight actors Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. Producers are clamoring to put them in movies, and the two actors — Pattinson, 23 and Lautner, 18 — can pretty much make any kind of film they choose. So it’s interesting that their post-Twilight movie careers are shaping up to be so drastically different.

Lautner, 18, has just signed on for an action thriller called Abduction, about a man who discovers his own baby picture on a missing persons website. Lautner will also be playing a super-powered secret agent fighting terrorists in the film Max Steel, a martial arts fighter who has to save his kidnapped friends on vacation in Cancun, and the titular body-stretching superhero in Stretch Armstrong. Notice a pattern here? Lautner is definitely gunning to be the next big action hero, following a path similar to the one Will Smith took in the mid-90s.

Pattinson, on the other hand, is steering away from adrenaline-fueled hero roles and choosing small, intense character pieces. Next up is March’s Remember Me, in which the 23-year-old actor plays a tortured college student who finds romance after a family tragedy. Then, post-Eclipse, he’ll be making three period pieces: Bel Ami, about a lothario who sleeps his way to the top in 19th-century Paris (co-starring Uma Thurman); Unbound Captives, about a frontiersman whose children are kidnapped (also starring Hugh Jackman); and Circus, about a Depression-era circus (with Reese Witherspoon as the love interest). These choices are reminiscent of the films made by Johnny Depp earlier in his career.

So while Lautner’s new films will show off his abs, Pattinson’s movies will flex his acting muscles. Both are good strategies for staying in the spotlight — and while Lautner may emerge the richer man, we see Oscar buzz in Pattinson’s future.

Taylor Lautner is a Hot Commodity!

Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood has some new info on Taylor Lautner’s upcoming films Stretch Armstrong and Northern Lights

I’ve learned that after 5 PM today, bidders will be told who won that Taylor Lautner-attached script Abducted which the new motion picture lit agency Verve sent out for its client Shawn Christensen. (At one point, Lionsgate had an exclusive negotiating window but couldn’t agree on terms.) Meanwhile, there’s a lot more Lautner news. He and Skydance’s flyboy movie Northern Lights have “respectfully parted ways over casting issues”, sources tell me, noting, “Taylor’s people want to step up and put the best actors and directors around him.” Now 5 more movies have been offered to the Twilight Saga’s 18-year-old co-star, including 2 for that open April slot. As for that new salary high of $7.5 million Skydance had offered him for Northern Lights, I’ve learned that Universal paid him that sum to play the title role in Stretch Armstrong. It’s good to be Taylor right now. (And let me talk you off the ledge if you’re not.)

Marc Malkin over at E! online just revealed that both Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will be presenting at the Oscars this year! Check it out!

After a bit of speculation as to whether The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse star Taylor Lautner would be asked to present at this year’s Academy Awards, it has just been revealed that not only will Lautner be there, but so will Kristen Stewart!

E! Online’s Marc Malkin just delivered the news, saying that he spoke to her – during today’s press junket for her film The Yellow Handkerchief – about that very thing.

“Yeah, I’m going,” Stewart just told me when I asked if we’d be seeing her on March 7 at the Academy Awards. “Me and Taylor are going to present.”

Stewart admits she’s very nervous.

“I’ve been looking at shoes,” she said. “I’m trying to pick shoes that I know I won’t fall down in.”

Yet Another Role for Taylor Lautner??

February 14, 2010 by Sara

Deadline is reporting that studios are battling over a possible new Taylor Lautner project entitled Abduction.  Here are the details.

The sluggish spec script marketplace will get a jolt today as Hollywood majors battle over a drama that has Hollywood’s highest paid and hardest working teen Taylor Lautner attached to star. I’ve learned the new lit agency Verve sent out the script by its client Shawn Christensen last night — and already two studios are ready to bid when the auction gets going at 9 AM PT today. Called Abduction, WME client Lautner plays a teen who has long felt disconnected from his parents, and figures out why. That unleashes a chain of violent events and enters Bourne territory. Considering he just got on the Hollywood radar because of the Twilight Saga (imagine, he was almost recast before New Moon) and just days ago blew out the candles on his 18th birthday cake, Lautner with his 8-pack abs is the newest and youngest action star in a dizzying volume of movie deals made over recent weeks. He’s already the lead in two major studio superhero franchises — Universal’s Stretch Armstrong and Paramount’s Max Steel — and was paid $7.5 million for the John Moore-directed Skydance Top Gun-esque thrill ride Northern Lights. Meanwhile, Abduction is the first big spec deal for Verve, whose principals came up at Endeavor and then recently left WME. Since Lautner is repped by WME (and Management 360), it looks like Ari Emanuel and company are playing nice with the upstart tenpercentery.
